Job Description
Position Title: Communications Specialist/Digital Campaigner
Terms: part time, up to 28 hours/week
Location: Based at our Victoria office and/or remote location
Reporting to: Communications Director, Executive Director
Wage: $32.50/hour
About the role:
You are a storyteller driven by a passion to mobilize communities everywhere to take action for Indigenous justice and environmental protection. You are a writer and media producer dedicated to writing and producing inspiring media including news stories, blogs, emails and compelling web and social media content.
You are a multi-skilled communicator who can engage online audiences, write fundraising appeals and campaign briefings, and plan and execute successful communications strategies with the team. You have experience with social media strategy and website management, with WordPress experience preferred. A digital activist, you are attuned to the opportunities and challenges of a shifting social media landscape and are quick to pick up new technologies and tools.
You’ll be working with a variety of stakeholders including First Nations, environmental groups, businesses, campaigners, and digital and engagement specialists. You enjoy working within a team, and for a cross sectional team of experts. You have a proven record of strategic campaign development and delivery of key messages through a myriad of channels, to regional and national target audiences. Fundraising experience is an asset.
You’ll lead communications responses for RAVEN campaigns including protection of marine areas, biodiversity, and a safe climate, while highlighting the risks posed by projects like Site C Dam, fracked gas pipelines and LNG facilities, and oil sands extraction. Working closely with the Campaigns Director and Communications team, you will ensure successful communication resources and capacity are fulfilled.
Responsibilities Include:
- Craft communications responses in collaboration with team members and across the organization including writing blogs and editorials, emails, news releases, and web and social media content.
- Deliver on long-term fundraising and audience engagement goals. Ongoing liaison with the Development team is required to help ensure content is aligned with RAVEN’s strategic plan.
- Assist to develop and deliver creative and effective communications plans. Key participant in planning and strategy sessions.
- Work with contract-based Organizers to promote and document events (currently within pandemic restrictions).
- Promote online engagement (including crowdfunding) to mobilize supporters along RAVEN’s engagement spiral from Know to Care to Act to Lead to Inspire.
- Identify and respond to opportunities arising from the news cycle related to RAVEN campaigns. Respond quickly and effectively to breaking environmental and Indigenous justice stories.
- Develop compelling presentations for webinars and external audiences.
- Copy editing as needed
- Website posting and updates
- Attend meetings, conferences and events on behalf of RAVEN as required.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- University or College degree/ diploma in media/communications field with a minimum of 5+ years professional writing experience. Relevant social science degree with focus on Indigenous studies, law, or environmental studies also considered. In exceptional cases, a combination of education and relevant work experience may be considered.
- Experience in non-profit, social enterprise or government, working with diverse stakeholders including experience with Indigenous communities.
- Media relations experience is an asset: working for media, getting earned media placed and or responding to media requests effectively.
- Proven writing ability to translate complex issues into simple, motivating narratives and messages for different and diverse audiences.
- Demonstrated success in strategic communications planning, objective setting and plan execution.
- Editorial experience (assignment, copy, web content, etc.) is an asset.
- Self-starter and quick responder; you are able to work independently.
What you bring to the role:
- Non-profit knowledge. Experience working with non-profit networks and coalitions on shared goals (e.g. sign-on letters, court cases, news conferences). This includes experience in grassroots-led groups, e.g. Indigenous Environmental Network, Wild Salmon Caravan etc.
- You’ve worked with First Nations, or local, regional and provincial governments.
- Experienced communicator; you know how to successfully communicate about environmental and indigenous justice issues for a variety of audiences, platforms and channels. You write content that brings a storied approach to enliven topics with character-driven, emotive resonance.
