People power has quashed pipelines, protected hundreds of thousands of hectares of land, and raised millions of dollars for Indigenous-led legal challenges. We’ve built our amazing RAVEN community by reaching out — through community town halls, marches, pancake breakfasts and concerts.
Now, during the COVID-19 pandemic, we recognize that community care means staying home to keep each other safe. While the idea of ‘social distancing goes against the grain of our movement, in the interests of protecting the vulnerable, it’s time to take our fight online.
In that spirit, we are excited to introduce #solidarityfromhome to keep us all united, energized and unwavering in our resolve for Indigenous rights and environmental justice.
#Solidarityfromhome will be a hub for home-based solidarity actions, community, conversation, news and other ways you can stay involved. We WILL continue taking bold action to support Wet’suwet’en, Beaver Lake Cree, Squamish, Tsleil-Waututh, Coldwater and all of the Nations RAVEN works with.
While communities shelter-in place to avoid the pandemic, Coastal GasLink pipeline construction continues over opposition from Wet’suwet’en. Heiltsuk Nation urgently needs funds to support their case against Kirby Corporation, and Secwepmec Nation continues to move forward with tenacity in their title case. Right now, Indigenous Peoples fighting Trans Mountain pipeline and tankers in court are preparing appeals to the Supreme Court of Canada. And Beaver Lake Cree are working furiously both to keep their community health systems afloat AND to raise the funds they need to push back against Canada and Alberta in their epic Tar Sands Trial.
First Nations should not have to choose between responding to COVID-19 in their communities and addressing a healthy environment on all our behalf.
