Co-hosted by RAVEN Trust and Stop Ecocide Canada, this webinar aims to raise awareness on how an international crime of ecocide could uphold Indigenous rights and benefit Indigenous land defenders & water protectors.
Moderated by Suzanne Dhaliwal, climate justice creative, campaigner, researcher, lecturer in environmental justice and trainer in creative strategies for decolonisation, a powerful and intimate discussion unfolded between the guest speakers:
– Melissa Mollen Dupuis, from the Innu Nation, co-founder of the Quebec branch of the Idle No More movement and current Boreal campaigner for the David Suzuki Foundation;
– Chief Dana Tizya-Tramm of Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation, lead voice to defend the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge; and
– Sleydo’ (Molly Wickham), fierce spokesperson for the Gidimt’en reoccupation site within the Wet’suwet’en Nation who are fighting the Coastal GasLink pipeline.
Together in discussion with hosts: – Louise Romain, International Grassroots outreach, Stop Ecocide International – Ana Simeon, Fundraising Campaigns Director, RAVEN From the Arctic, to the West and the East coasts of Canada, the guest speakers shared stories from the front lines of climate change, expressing the entanglement of food sovereignty, the complexities with access to traditional territories, and the importance of self-determination.
They told legends, assayed the Western power structures, drew lines in the sand about the ongoing colonialism, and called upon the audience to take a stand.
