WILDFIRE RELIEF RESOURCES

Our thoughts go out to all communities across Turtle Island and beyond who are being affected by the current wildfires. Many are saying that this year is Canada’s worst-ever wildfire season, with more than 1,000 active fires burning across the country, including 265 in the Northwest Territories. Experts say that the climate crisis has exacerbated the problem, and studies have shown that Indigenous communities are disproportionately affected.

Fires aren’t uncommon on Indigenous lands, but they’re now occurring over such a widespread area that more and more communities are experiencing devastating loss and irreversible damage to ways of life — stoking fears of what a hotter, drier future will bring, especially to communities where traditions live deeply within the land itself.

Many of the most vulnerable communities have a tiny carbon footprint but are often on the frontlines of anthropogenic climate disaster.

We have compiled a list of mutual aid resources. Please share widely and donate if you can!
