RAVEN is environmental justice powered by you.
Indigenous Peoples in Canada have some of the most powerful environmental rights in the world. But only if they can afford to uphold them in court — that’s where RAVEN comes in.
In 2009, RAVEN was founded with a goal to change the legal system from the inside out — we believe in a future where we see Indigenous rights upheld across the country. For 15 years, we’ve been working to support Indigenous Nations that are upholding their rights in court.
RAVEN has been increasing access to environmental justice for Indigenous Nations for 15 years!
With support from organizers, fundraisers, foundations, and donors, RAVEN has raised over $23 million.
We have supported 17 legal challenges and 11 legal interventions.
We have supported campaigns whose legal victories have protected sacred lands, upheld modern Treaty rights, stopped pipelines, defended the land from open-pit mining, and advocated for the preservation of spiritually significant sites.
Of course we dream of a world where RAVEN doesn’t have a reason to exist. We dream of Indigenous rights being upheld, we dream of caretaking practices and stewardship by Indigenous Peoples being woven into Canadian law, and we dream of a world where humanity does not see itself as separate from the environment — where we are all collectively practicing ways of being that contribute to the thriving of all living things. That’s the future we believe in. But, we need your help to get there.
A Legal Theory of Change
RAVEN works to support Indigenous Peoples in enforcing their rights and title in court to protect their lands, sovereignty, and ways of being. When we partner with Indigenous Nations, we raise both funds and awareness for their legal actions. Every campaign we take on is an opportunity to redefine justice through setting legal precedents, to return stewardship to First Peoples by advancing Indigenous rights, and to take action for our shared futures by establishing lasting environmental legacies.
Indigenous-led litigation is sparking transformative change across Canada, and we are grateful to help amplify these voices and support their access to justice that is creating a path towards a more just future for all. Together, we’re building a movement for lasting systemic change!
