SUMMARY:The Cumulative Impacts: Defend the Treaties with Beaver Lake Cree Nation
DESCRIPTION:Join RAVEN for a webinar in support of Beaver Lake Cree Nation’s Defend the Treaties litigation on May 7th from 5:30-6:45pm (PT) / 6:30-7:45pm (MT)\, where we will hear from: Crystal Lameman\, Beaver Lake Cree Nation member and their Government Relations Advisor and Treaty Coordinator. Karey Brooks\, lead counsel on the case. Christine Hutchinson\, Indigenous Cumulative Effects Advisor from the Indigenous Centre for Cumulative Effects\, and Christina Joynt\, Associate at JFK Law LLP in Vancouver\, where she practices litigation and dispute resolution with a focus on Treaty and Aboriginal rights\, Specific Claims. \n\n\n\nIt has been 18 years since Beaver Lake Cree Nation filed their case against the governments of Alberta and Canada to defend their rights to hunt\, fish\, and practice their culture as guaranteed under Treaty 6. With this legal action\, the First Nation is pushing back against one of the largest and most carbon-intensive energy developments on the planet\, the oil sands. Beaver Lake Cree Nation is challenging the cumulative impacts of industrial development. Not one project\, not one mine: all of them at once. \n\n\n\nAfter hearing the Beaver Lake Cree Nation’s case\, the court will have to consider whether Canada and Alberta have authorized too much industrial development without properly assessing the impacts of all those projects on Treaty 6 rights. A victory for Beaver Lake Cree Nation would become a strong precedent for other Treaty Nations to allow for the protection of land\, air\, and water for all Canadians and future generations. \n\n\n\nOne year from now\, Beaver Lake Cree Nation will finally head to court. It’s estimated they will spend 150 days in court. Learn more about the impact of cumulative effects\, how Beaver Lake Cree Nation’s case could change the game for Treaty rights\, and how you can support them as they prepare for a trial nearly 20 years in the making. \n\n\n\nGet your tickets here and make a donation to support their legal fees.

SUMMARY:Birding with RAVEN
DESCRIPTION:Join RAVEN\, Stanley Park Ecology\, and Special Bird Services for an exciting birding adventure through Stanley Park. Led by RAVEN’s Board President\, lawyer\, and avid birder Jeffrey Nicholls\, attendees will meet at the Stanley Park Nature House to connect with fellow nature-lovers\, learn about RAVEN’s work\, and hear more about our campaign with the Mowachaht-Muchalaht First Nation before going out birding around Ch’ekxwa’7lech (Lost Lagoon). \n\n\n\nThe event runs from 10am to 12pm\, beginning with an introduction from Jeffrey and RAVEN’s Campaigns Manager\, Levin Chamberlain. This introduction will give some necessary context to the day’s activity\, sharing how Indigenous-led stewardship has shaped the forests and ecosystems we all benefit from. You’ll learn why Mowachaht-Muchalaht First Nation’s legal challenge matters for the future of birds (and bird lovers like you)\, forests\, and all living beings.  \n\n\n\nSpring migration will be underway\, and the birds we see on this day may even be traveling northwest\, passing through\, or nesting within Mowachaht-Muchalaht territory. Join us on May 3\, 2026\, to witness these small and large travelers in motion and to reflect on the interconnected landscapes we all depend on.  \n\n\n\nIt is free to attend\, but we do ask that you register so we can better plan. Donations for this event will go to Mowachaht-Muchalaht First Nation’s legal challenge. Your gift will help to uphold their right to implement their own forestry management and sovereignty over their territory\, ensuring that critical habitats remain intact for birds (and other creatures) to thrive for generations to come.  \n\n\n\nBring your binoculars (we’ll have a few extras)\, dress for the weather\, and come ready to listen — to the land\, the birds\, and the ongoing story of Indigenous stewardship. This event will also provide you with an opportunity to learn how to properly identify birds in the birding community. Birding is a fun and great way to take part in citizen science; birders all over the world create lists of the birds they see and hear on verified birding apps\, and some scientists rely on accurate data collection to keep track of bird species. Although you don’t need to be a birder to attend this event\, and there is no pressure to learn\, the leaders of the event have enough expertise to teach you the first steps of making birding a passion that makes a real difference for the scientific community. \n\n\n\nThe Details: \n\n\n\nWhen: May 3rd\, 10 am – 12 pm \n\n\n\nWhere: Lost Lagoon\, meet at the Stanley Park Nature House \n\n\n\nRegister: raventrust.com/events

SUMMARY:Solastalgia: Lino Block Printing
DESCRIPTION:Addressing Climate Anxiety through Community Building and Art-Making. This session we will create lino block prints. \n\n\n\nSolastalgia: Addressing Climate Anxiety through Community Building and Art-Making is back for its fourth session. This time RAVEN staff and supporters will be coming together to make lino block art and prints. \n\n\n\nAs always with these sessions\, this workshop will start with conversations and prompts to get our ideas flowing and to create opportunities for connection. We will also spend time reflecting and nurturing the ideas and concepts discussed at the previous zine-making\, which had a theme of “Collective Action.” As we begin the art-making\, we will all be invited to express some of our dreams\, ideas\, hopes\, and fears about the climate and our collective futures through carving into the lino blocks and then doing a few prints together. \n\n\n\nWe will be weaving in ideas of how we can connect across differences and take action as individuals and as a community — we will discuss a multitude of ways we can all participate in re-imagining the future. We will sip tea\, share stories\, and make space for creativity and connection to see what can bloom from time spent creating together. \n\n\n\nRAVEN will provide any materials needed for creating prints on paper\, but if you have a t-shirt or piece of fabric you would like to print onto\, please bring them along. \n\n\n\nLocation: \n\n\n\nPaul Phillips Hall — in the back of the Little Fernwood Gallery —1923 Fernwood Rd. Victoria\, B.C. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAgenda: \n\n\n\n10:00: doors\, tea\, coffee\, snacks made available \n\n\n\n10:30: Introduction to activity\, writing and art prompts\, orientation to the space and materials and/how we hope to use it \n\n\n\n10:40-12:30 – lino block carving and printing \n\n\n\n12:30-12:45 – closing thoughts \n\n\n\n12:45-1:15 – clean up and goodbyes \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe term “solastalgia” was coined by philosopher Glenn Albrecht. He describes it as “the homesickness you have when you are still at home” and your home environment is changing in ways you find distressing\, often due to climate change.

SUMMARY:Solastalgia: Zine Making #2
DESCRIPTION:Addressing Climate Anxiety through Community Building and Art-Making. This session we will co-create issue #2 of a community Zine. \n\n\n\nJoin RAVEN for another round of Solastalgia: Addressing Climate Anxiety through Community Building and Art-Making. At these events the RAVEN community comes together to discuss our climate anxieties (and potential actions to take to address them) through community building and art-making.  \n\n\n\nThis hands-on zine making workshop will offer an opportunity to express some of our fears\, ideas\, and dreams when it comes to a more just and liveable future. Weaving in ideas of how we can connect across difference and take action as individuals and as a community\, from diverting personal waste to showing up in solidarity with Indigenous rights movements — we will discuss a multitude of ways we can all participate in re-imagining the future. We will sip tea\, share stories\, and make space for creativity and connection to see what can bloom from an afternoon together. The theme of this issue will be\, “Collective Action.” \n\n\n\nRAVEN will provide any materials needed\, but feel free to bring magazines\, books\, stickers\, or other materials that you are comfortable cutting up.  \n\n\n\n*RAVEN’s Zine Issue #1 will be available in print for those who may want a copy. \n\n\n\nLocation: \n\n\n\nPaul Phillips Hall — in the back of the Little Fernwood Gallery —1923 Fernwood Rd. SUMMARY:RAVEN Book Club
DESCRIPTION:RAVEN is continuing our book club this fall! Join us on October 9th\, 2025\, at 5pm PT (8pm ET) to discuss how resource extraction interacts with Indigenous rights in It Stops Here by Rueben George and Michael Simpson. \n\n\n\n\n\nThe Trans Mountain Pipeline was\, to say the very least\, controversial. Rueben George\, who is an incredible leader of the Tsleil-Waututh Nation and was hired to fight the pipeline\, fiercely opposed the pipeline project for over a decade. In this firsthand account of his resistance\, George dives into the deep cultural\, spiritual\, and political connections to the unceded land that brought the “why” behind the powerful movement for protecting Indigenous rights.  \n\n\n\nThe book can be purchased here or from your local independent bookstore. Many libraries also carry copies or audiobook versions. You can also listen to the audiobook wherever you get your audiobooks\, such as Spotify. \n\n\n\nDepending on the number of attendees\, individual participation may vary.  \n\n\n\nRegister to join the discussion here.

SUMMARY:Solastalgia: Addressing Climate Anxiety through Community Building and Art-Making — Session 2: Making Art Public
DESCRIPTION:Join RAVEN for session 2 of our summer series addressing climate grief through community and art making. In this session\, our collective ideas will be transformed into vibrant public art. We’ll be taking the insights and inspiration from our zine-making workshop and bringing them to life through a collaborative piece of art that we will bring to the public.  \n\n\n\nWhat to expect: For session 2\, we are going out into the community\, as we take our ideas from session 1 and turn them into a temporary public mural in Fernwood Square. Because we will be outside in the beautiful summer sun\, make sure to bring water\, wear sunscreen\, and take breaks as needed. There are also some accessibility aspects to note\, as the temporary mural will be on the ground\, so to participate in the painting\, you will need to bend over\, crouch\, or sit on the ground at some point throughout the session. If this isn’t accessible to you\, we still would love for you to stop by\, contribute your ideas to the conversations\, and take up space in public together!  We invite everyone to attend\, whether you came to session 1 or not. All skill levels are welcome as the mural making will be led by the RAVEN Communications team\, and artist\, Coulee Ross. \n\n\n\nThis interactive art-making event invites us all to communicate with the wider community that we are not alone — and that together we can take action for our collective futures. The day will begin with a short moment to connect and be in conversation with each other on the theme of reimagining collective futures — and re-rooting into the idea that we can respond to our climate grief with connection and imagination. We will then co-create a piece of public art.  \n\n\n\nCopies of the zine from Session 1 will be available on-site. \n\n\n\nThe mural we will be working on will have space for collaboration\, but will have a baseline design done by Coulee Ross. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nDetails \n\n\n\nLocation: Little Fernwood Gallery\, Victoria\, B.C. & Fernwood Square \n\n\n\nDate and Time: August 24\, 2025\, from 10 am – 1 pm \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nWhat to expect — (note\, you do not have to stay for the entire time – you can drop in and out through the event): \n\n\n\n10:00: doors\, tea\, coffee\, snacks made available \n\n\n\n10:30: Introduction to activity\, reflections from previous session \n\n\n\n10:45-12:45 – Mural Painting \n\n\n\n12:45-1:00 closing thoughts \n\n\n\n1:00-1:15 – clean up and goodbyes \n\n\n\nArtist bio: Coulee Ross is a nêhiyaw iskwêw (Cree woman) from Peepeekisis Cree Nation in Treaty 4 territory and a citizen of the Métis Nation of BC. She is an interdisciplinary artist\, writer\, and story-weaver working at the intersections of Indigenous futurism\, felt history\, and narrative alchemy. Her practice spans visual arts\, immersive listening\, spatial storytelling\, political aesthetics\, and place-based methodologies—centering community memory and future possibility through collaborative creation. \n\n\n\nRecently\, Coulee completed an artist residency at Rockslide Gallery and curated a multi-day Storytellers Festival that foregrounded Indigenous narrative practice\, relational ethics\, and temporal fluidity. Her work draws on tactile media\, cartographic imagination\, and participatory installation to activate story as both a vessel and a method of transformation. \n\n\n\nShe is the creator of the Something Else Universe\, an expanding transmedia world that invites us to reimagine reality through Indigenous ways of knowing\, feeling\, and being. Her original methodologies—including Liminal Story Weaving\, Unstorying\, and Futuration—are grounded in the belief that stories are alive\, and transforming story is a form of liberation. \n\n\n\nCoulee’s current projects include Liminal Frequencies\, a speculative radio collaboration with UMFM exploring how vibration\, imagination\, and Indigenous frequency can carry futures through the air. Her practice invites others to consider storytelling not as content\, but as consciousness. Not as performance\, but as portal. Not as escape\, but as return.

Join us on August 20th to hear from representatives from the Houses involved in the case and their legal counsel about their climate litigation and what’s at stake with their motion to strike hearing the following day! \n\n\n\nIf you’re in the Vancouver area\, come on out to this solidarity event on August 20th from 7pm-9pm at the Vancouver Unitarians (949 W 49th Ave) in Vancouver. Not in the Vancouver area? The virtual component will go from 7pm-8pm PT. \n\n\n\nWe want people everywhere to take action in solidarity with the Likhts’amisyu House groups. After the speeches\, those of us in person will be making posters together with words of support like “We Are All One Planet” to post on social media. We want to inundate our feeds with a call to action to friends\, family\, and even frenemies in our networks to show their solidarity with the Chiefs from the Likhts’amisyu Clan. SUMMARY:Solastalgia: Addressing Climate Anxiety through Community Building and Art-Making — Session 1: Zine Making
DESCRIPTION:Join RAVEN for the first in a two-part summer series where we will be coming together to discuss our climate anxieties (and potential actions to take to address them) through community building and art-making.  \n\n\n\n\n\nThis hands-on zine-making workshop will offer an opportunity to express some of our fears\, ideas\, and dreams when it comes to a more just and liveable future. Weaving in ideas of how we can connect across differences and take action as individuals and as a community\, from diverting personal waste to showing up in solidarity with Indigenous rights movements\, we will discuss a multitude of ways we can all participate in re-imagining the future. We will sip tea\, share stories\, and make space for creativity and connection to see what can bloom from an afternoon together. \n\n\n\nThroughout the session\, participants will be invited to record audio reflections on the theme of the day — whether it’s personal climate grief\, dreams for a better future\, or the art that emerges during the workshop.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDetails \n\n\n\nLocation: Little Fernwood Gallery\, Victoria\, B.C. \n\n\n\nDate and Time: July 20\, 2025\, from 10 am – 1 pm \n\n\n\nWhat to expect — (note\, you do not have to stay for the entire time – you can drop in and out through the event): \n\n\n\n\n10:00: doors\, tea\, coffee\, snacks made available\n\n\n\n10:30: Introduction to activity\, writing and art prompts\, orientation to the space and materials and history of zine making/how we hope to use it\n\n\n\n10:40-12:30 – Zine making\, open conversation\, open recording booth\n\n\n\n12:30-12:45 – closing thoughts\n\n\n\n12:45-1:15 – clean up and goodbyes

SUMMARY:Indigenous Legal Orders and How to Weave Them into Cases - CPD Accredited by B.C. and Ontario
DESCRIPTION:Canadian law is advancing reconciliation\, holding governments and industries accountable to the intent of the word. Governments are signing self-government agreements and modern treaties with Nations across the country. But one topic that’s often overlooked is Indigenous Legal Orders.  \n\n\n\nIn some ways\, there is the revitalization of Indigenous legal orders through the Canadian legal system\, but in many other ways\, it’s oppressing those orders. As a legal professional working with Indigenous clients\, there may be crucial things you need to know about legal orders to better honour them\, and how to best navigate them through each step of a client’s case. \n\n\n\nLawyers at this CPD course (accredited by B.C. and Ontario) will hear from faculty members Christina Gray and Katharine Brack\, who will each present on how Indigenous Legal Orders are incorporated into their work. \n\n\n\nDetails\n\n\n\nDate: June 19th\, 2025 \n\n\n\nLocation: Virtual \n\n\n\nTime: 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM PDT \n\n\n\nThis webinar will not be recorded \n\n\n\nAccess Statement: RAVEN uses Microsoft Teams’ built-in accessibility features such as closed captions\, which are automatically generated. SUMMARY:Clean Up the Beach in solidarity with Heiltsuk Nation
DESCRIPTION:Join RAVEN and Surfrider for a World Oceans Day beach cleanup\, where we’ll be fundraising for Heiltsuk Nation’s legal challenge that aims to protect marine ecosystems from coast to coast to coast.  \n\n\n\nThis year\, we’re choosing to engage in community reciprocity not just for our own local watersheds\, but as an act of solidarity with Heiltsuk Nation\, whose own beach cleanup — following the Nathan E. Stewart spill — is so much more complex. \n\n\n\nSo\, come out to Clover Point in Victoria on Sunday\, June 8\, 2025 from 11am-1pm for a community-powered beach cleanup. Together we are aiming to fundraise $2\,000 for Heiltsuk’s legal challenge on World Oceans Day. \n\n\n\nThe remediation after the Nathan E. Stewart disaster is nearly 9 years deep — and the community still cannot harvest clams\, fish or seaweed in  the area where a sunken tug spilled tens of thousands of litres of fuel. To support the Nation’s ongoing pursuit of justice in the wake of the spill\, we’re cleaning up a local beach while raising funds for Heiltsuk’s legal case.  A win for the Nation would enshrine Indigenous stewardship practices into law to toughen regulations about fossil fuel transport and protect marine ecosystems for future generations.  \n\n\n\nRegister for the event here and make a donation to support Heiltsuk here. Let’s come together to show our commitment to environmental stewardship: not only within our own neighbourhoods\,  but also in support of the Heiltsuk Nation.   \n\n\n\nEvent Details: \n\n\n\nClover Point\, Victoria B.C\, 11am-1pm PST \n\n\n\nAccessibility Info: \n\n\n\nClover Point has public bathrooms nearby. Please keep in mind that we will be walking up and down the beach and park area — please wear appropriate footwear!  \n\n\n\nPlease bring:  \n\n\n\n\nCash or cheque to make a donation – or your phone to donate online\n\n\n\nA waterbottle\n\n\n\nSunscreen / sun hat/ / sun protection\n\n\n\nGloves (we may have some extra\, but please bring your own\, just in case)\n\n\n\nAny snacks you may need for the duration of the cleanup\n\n\n\nAny cleanup tools that you may need/want to help make the day easier for you!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDonate
