DESCRIPTION:For the second year in a row\, RAVEN is partnering with Surfrider to cleanup the beach at Clover Point in Victoria\, Sign the waiver now and join us for the beach cleanup at Clover Point in Victoria B.C. at 11am-1pm on June 14 to show your solidarity with clean coastlines and with Heiltsuk Nation\, whose beach cleanup isn’t so simple.  \nDonate to support Heiltsuk Nation’s legal challenge now. Read the giveaway details and enter to win below. \nIn October\, 2016 a tug without a certified pilot ran aground and spilled over 110\,000 litres of diesel oil in Heiltsuk waters on the central coast of British Columbia. The tug and attached barge were carrying diesel through Heiltsuk waters despite Heiltsuk prohibition of oil transport through their marine harvesting areas. Through inadequate government and corporate response\, and despite Heiltsuk responders’ heroic efforts to mitigate the damage\, the spill contaminated key shellfish harvesting areas and critical habitat for the Northern abalone. The Heiltsuk suffered a violent disruption to their way of life\, their economy\, their history and identity\, and their spiritual connection to the land. Heiltsuk Nation is taking Kirby Corporation (an oil shipping company)\, Canada\, and British Columbia to court in response to the spill.  \nNow\, nearly ten years later\, the Nation still cannot use the critical marine harvesting sites damaged from the spill. The Nation and Heiltsuk community themselves have taken on the responsibility to be better prepared for inevitable spills in their coastal waters. With their landmark legal challenge\, Heiltsuk Nation aims to toughen oil spill regulations from coast to coast to coast across Canada and set a precedent for Aboriginal title to the foreshore and seabed. If successful\, this legal challenge would strengthen Heiltsuk jurisdiction in the courts so they can manage their territory according to Heiltsuk laws.   \nRAVEN Victoria Folk Music Festival Tickets Giveaway – Official Rules\nRAVEN is giving away two General Admission tickets to the Victoria Folk Music Festival! This series has had so much interest and requests to host in other cities\, so to answer that call\, the next two sessions will be taking place in Vancouver\, B.C. \nThis chapter of the series will explore the theme of Ecosystems of Care. We’ll consider the relationships and practices within communities that sustain us through times of ecological and social change. Together\, we will reflect on how care flows between people\, land\, water\, more-than-human kin\, and future generations. And we’ll ask ourselves what it means to nurture resilience in an era of climate uncertainty. \nFor the first installment on August 16\, 2026\, we will be hosting a Solastalgia-themed poetry and prose workshop facilitated by natasha gauthier\, a mixed settler and reconnecting Indigenous multidisciplinary writer and visual artist. Through guided writing prompts\, reflection\, and discussion\, participants will explore their relationship to place\, climate change\, grief\, belonging\, and collective care. Whether you’re an experienced writer or simply curious about writing your thoughts out\, this workshop will offer a welcoming space to connect with others and express what it means to live in a changing world. \nThen\, on September 20\, 2026\, we’ll gather again to create a community chapbook featuring writing generated from the first workshop (and any other work that attendees may want to bring). Through hands-on creativity (think cut-and-paste-collage\, drawing\, and more)\, we’ll shape a collaborative chapbook that captures our stories\, concerns\, hopes\, and visions for thriving ecosystems of care.
