SUMMARY:RAVEN Book Club: Crushed Wild Mint
DESCRIPTION:Join RAVEN online via Zoom to discuss the book Crushed Wild Mint by Jess Housty\, followed by a special live reading from Jess! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCrushed Wild Mint is a powerful and sensory collection of poetry rooted in land\, ancestry\, and lived experience. Written by Heiltsuk poet and land-based educator Jess Housty\, the poems draw deeply from their homeland on the central coast of British Columbia and explore themes of connection to land\, ancestral wisdom\, family and community\, and the interplay between the natural and spiritual worlds. Through vivid imagery\, Housty invites readers into a reflective and embodied experience that blends history\, ceremony\, sexuality\, grief\, and joy. The book celebrates living and loving as ongoing practices and encourages readers to rethink community and relationality beyond human boundaries\, connecting with place\, kin and all our non-human relatives. \n\n\n\nAll participants will be entered into a draw to win a copy of Crushed Wild Mint following the event. Depending on the number of attendees\, individual participation may vary. \n\n\n\nThe book can be purchased here: Harbour Publishing or from your local independent bookstore. Many libraries also carry copies or audiobook versions. \n\n\n\nWe will be hosting two more book club meetings over the year so stay tuned for more info and the next books! \n\n\n\nDon’t miss RAVEN’s Book Club where we will discuss Crushed Wild Mint on April 30\, 2026 @ 5-6 PM (PT) | 8-9 PM (ET)

SUMMARY:Birding with RAVEN
DESCRIPTION:Join RAVEN\, Stanley Park Ecology\, and Special Bird Services for an exciting birding adventure through Stanley Park. Led by RAVEN’s Board President\, lawyer\, and avid birder Jeffrey Nicholls\, attendees will meet at the Stanley Park Nature House to connect with fellow nature-lovers\, learn about RAVEN’s work\, and hear more about our campaign with the Mowachaht-Muchalaht First Nation before going out birding around Ch’ekxwa’7lech (Lost Lagoon). \n\n\n\nThe event runs from 10am to 12pm\, beginning with an introduction from Jeffrey and RAVEN’s Campaigns Manager\, Levin Chamberlain. This introduction will give some necessary context to the day’s activity\, sharing how Indigenous-led stewardship has shaped the forests and ecosystems we all benefit from. You’ll learn why Mowachaht-Muchalaht First Nation’s legal challenge matters for the future of birds (and bird lovers like you)\, forests\, and all living beings.  \n\n\n\nSpring migration will be underway\, and the birds we see on this day may even be traveling northwest\, passing through\, or nesting within Mowachaht-Muchalaht territory. Join us on May 3\, 2026\, to witness these small and large travelers in motion and to reflect on the interconnected landscapes we all depend on.  \n\n\n\nIt is free to attend\, but we do ask that you register so we can better plan. Donations for this event will go to Mowachaht-Muchalaht First Nation’s legal challenge. Your gift will help to uphold their right to implement their own forestry management and sovereignty over their territory\, ensuring that critical habitats remain intact for birds (and other creatures) to thrive for generations to come.  \n\n\n\nBring your binoculars (we’ll have a few extras)\, dress for the weather\, and come ready to listen — to the land\, the birds\, and the ongoing story of Indigenous stewardship. This event will also provide you with an opportunity to learn how to properly identify birds in the birding community. Birding is a fun and great way to take part in citizen science; birders all over the world create lists of the birds they see and hear on verified birding apps\, and some scientists rely on accurate data collection to keep track of bird species. Although you don’t need to be a birder to attend this event\, and there is no pressure to learn\, the leaders of the event have enough expertise to teach you the first steps of making birding a passion that makes a real difference for the scientific community. \n\n\n\nThe Details: \n\n\n\nWhen: May 3rd\, 10 am – 12 pm \n\n\n\nWhere: Lost Lagoon\, meet at the Stanley Park Nature House \n\n\n\nRegister: raventrust.com/events

SUMMARY:The Cumulative Impacts: Defend the Treaties with Beaver Lake Cree Nation
DESCRIPTION:Join RAVEN for a webinar in support of Beaver Lake Cree Nation’s Defend the Treaties litigation on May 7th from 5:30-6:45pm (PT) / 6:30-7:45pm (MT)\, where we will hear from Crystal Lameman\, Beaver Lake Cree Nation member and their Government Relations Advisor and Treaty Coordinator\, Karey Brooks\, lead counsel on the case\, and Christine Hutchinson\, Indigenous Cumulative Effects Advisor from the Indigenous Centre for Cumulative Effects. \n\n\n\nIt has been 18 years since Beaver Lake Cree Nation filed their case against the governments of Alberta and Canada to defend their rights to hunt\, fish\, and practice their culture as guaranteed under Treaty 6. With this legal action\, the First Nation is pushing back against one of the largest and most carbon-intensive energy developments on the planet\, the oil sands. Beaver Lake Cree Nation is challenging the cumulative impacts of industrial development. Not one project\, not one mine: all of them at once. \n\n\n\nAfter hearing the Beaver Lake Cree Nation’s case\, the court will have to consider whether Canada and Alberta have authorized too much industrial development without properly assessing the impacts of all those projects on Treaty 6 rights. A victory for Beaver Lake Cree Nation would become a strong precedent for other Treaty Nations to allow for the protection of land\, air\, and water for all Canadians and future generations. \n\n\n\nOne year from now\, Beaver Lake Cree Nation will finally head to court. It’s estimated they will spend 150 days in court. Learn more about the impact of cumulative effects\, how Beaver Lake Cree Nation’s case could change the game for Treaty rights\, and how you can support them as they prepare for a trial nearly 20 years in the making. \n\n\n\nGet your tickets here and make a donation to support their legal fees.
