SUMMARY:Indigenous Legal Orders and How to Weave Them into Cases - CPD Accredited by B.C. and Ontario
DESCRIPTION:Canadian law is advancing reconciliation\, holding governments and industries accountable to the intent of the word. Governments are signing self-government agreements and modern treaties with Nations across the country. But one topic that’s often overlooked is Indigenous Legal Orders.  \n\n\n\nIn some ways\, there is the revitalization of Indigenous legal orders through the Canadian legal system\, but in many other ways\, it’s oppressing those orders. As a legal professional working with Indigenous clients\, there may be crucial things you need to know about legal orders to better honour them\, and how to best navigate them through each step of a client’s case. \n\n\n\nLawyers at this CPD course (accredited by B.C. and Ontario) will hear from faculty members Christina Gray and Katharine Brack\, who will each present on how Indigenous Legal Orders are incorporated into their work. \n\n\n\nDetails\n\n\n\nDate: June 19th\, 2025 \n\n\n\nLocation: Virtual \n\n\n\nTime: 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM PDT \n\n\n\nThis webinar will not be recorded \n\n\n\nAccess Statement: RAVEN uses Microsoft Teams’ built-in accessibility features such as closed captions\, which are automatically generated. SUMMARY:Clean Up the Beach in solidarity with Heiltsuk Nation
DESCRIPTION:Join RAVEN and Surfrider for a World Oceans Day beach cleanup\, where we’ll be fundraising for Heiltsuk Nation’s legal challenge that aims to protect marine ecosystems from coast to coast to coast.  \n\n\n\nThis year\, we’re choosing to engage in community reciprocity not just for our own local watersheds\, but as an act of solidarity with Heiltsuk Nation\, whose own beach cleanup — following the Nathan E. Stewart spill — is so much more complex. \n\n\n\nSo\, come out to Clover Point in Victoria on Sunday\, June 8\, 2025 from 11am-1pm for a community-powered beach cleanup. Together we are aiming to fundraise $2\,000 for Heiltsuk’s legal challenge on World Oceans Day. \n\n\n\nThe remediation after the Nathan E. Stewart disaster is nearly 9 years deep — and the community still cannot harvest clams\, fish or seaweed in  the area where a sunken tug spilled tens of thousands of litres of fuel. To support the Nation’s ongoing pursuit of justice in the wake of the spill\, we’re cleaning up a local beach while raising funds for Heiltsuk’s legal case.  A win for the Nation would enshrine Indigenous stewardship practices into law to toughen regulations about fossil fuel transport and protect marine ecosystems for future generations.  \n\n\n\nRegister for the event here and make a donation to support Heiltsuk here. Let’s come together to show our commitment to environmental stewardship: not only within our own neighbourhoods\,  but also in support of the Heiltsuk Nation.   \n\n\n\nEvent Details: \n\n\n\nClover Point\, Victoria B.C\, 11am-1pm PST \n\n\n\nAccessibility Info: \n\n\n\nClover Point has public bathrooms nearby. Please keep in mind that we will be walking up and down the beach and park area — please wear appropriate footwear!  \n\n\n\nPlease bring:  \n\n\n\n\nCash or cheque to make a donation – or your phone to donate online\n\n\n\nA waterbottle\n\n\n\nSunscreen / sun hat/ / sun protection\n\n\n\nGloves (we may have some extra\, but please bring your own\, just in case)\n\n\n\nAny snacks you may need for the duration of the cleanup\n\n\n\nAny cleanup tools that you may need/want to help make the day easier for you!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDonate
