This week, Premiere Doug Ford rescinded his plans to develop the Greenbelt, a protected area of greenspace consisting of sensitive ecosystems such as wetlands, rivers and lakes. “It was a mistake to open the Greenbelt. As a first step to earn back your trust, I'll be reversing the changes we made and won't make any changes to the Greenbelt in the future,” says Ford.

Next week, September 27th, 5 Indigenous communities - collectively known as the Land Defense Alliance (LDA) - from Northern Ontario will be seeking an audience with Doug Ford to halt mining activity on their traditional homelands. “You want to open up our Homelands to mining, but you won’t meet with us. You won’t even look us in the eye,” stated the Chiefs in an open letter to Premier Ford.

Two of the First Nations in the LDA are also a part of the RAVEN supported, groundbreaking legal challenge - The Breathing Lands - that sees a coalition of ten Nations in Ontario aiming to restore Indigenous governance in Treaty 9 territory. Because of many of the overlapping objectives of the Breathing Lands campaign and the LDA, RAVEN will be showing up in solidarity alongside the LDA in whatever ways we can.

Doug Ford has reversed his decisions around opening up the Greenbelt saying that trust needs to be earned back by the Ontario community. We hope that he heeds his own advice and shows up to the discussion table on Sept 26 to hear the voices of Indigenous Nations demanding respect for their rights and protection of their homelands from mining incursions.

"If We Don't Protect Our Future - No One Will" - Cheif Moonias, Neshkantaga First Nation

On September 27th, 12 pm 2023 five First Nations from Northern Ontario will come to Toronto to lead a march calling on Premier Ford to end unwanted mining activity on their Territories. These five strong First Nations have formed a historic alliance to protect their lands and waters in the face of mounting concerns about encroachment on their territories by mining exploration companies who have been enabled by the Ford Government.

Prospectors have staked thousands of new claims on these First Nations’ territories since Ford came to power. They are exploiting Ontario’s antiquated “free entry” mining system that allows companies and individuals to stake mining claims on First Nations lands from the comfort of their offices without gaining the consent of the Indigenous people who live there.

However, the areas that these prospectors are staking have been home to Indigenous people for countless generations and continue to provide the sources of life, culture, and livelihood for them. In spite of the well-known concerns of these First Nations, and many attempts to bring the Ford government to the table, the free entry system remains in place and new claims continue to be registered in social conflict zones against the will of First Nations.

Join the Land Defence Alliance - a coalition of 5 First Nations from Northern Ontario - to demand respect for Indigenous rights and protect the sources of life on their Territories in the face of mining incursions. Through this march the Land Alliance will show their strength, present their demands, and build public support for their struggle for control over their lives and their lands.

In an inspiring appeal for recognition and respect

In an inspiring appeal for recognition and respect, four First Nations Chiefs from Northern Ontario are calling on Ontario Premier Doug Ford to meet with them face-to-face to address growing concerns about mining incursions on their Indigenous Homelands. LINK IN BIO to read the full piece!

The request for a meeting comes after Premier Ford repeatedly refuses to engage with the First Nations leaders on this critical issue, or any issue regarding Indigenous governance of Treaty territories.

In an open letter to Premier Ford, the Chiefs stated, “You want to open up our Homelands to mining, but you won’t meet with us. You won’t even look us in the eye.”

To address this ongoing concern, the Chiefs have extended an invitation to Premier Ford to meet with them on September 26, 2023 at 12:15pm, where they will have a formal meeting table right on the lawn of Queen’s Park Legislature.

The LDA is a collaboration of four First Nations who have signed a mutual cooperation agreement to stop the unwanted encroachments of settler government and unchecked industry on their territories.

Two of the four First Nations in the LDA are also a part of the RAVEN-supported, groundbreaking legal challenge that sees a coalition of ten Nations in Ontario aiming to restore Indigenous governance in Treaty 9 territory. The Breathing Lands Campaign launched in June 2023; amongst the ten co-plaintiffs are LDA members Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug (Big Trout Lake First Nation) and Wapekeka First Nation (not to mention RAVEN’s ongoing support for Neskantaga Nation in a legal challenge that was heard in court earlier this year).

Because of many of the overlapping objectives of the Breathing Lands campaign and the Land Defence Alliance, RAVEN is showing up in solidarity alongside the LDA in whatever ways we can, including Danielle Wilson, our new Executive Director, and Communications Director Andrea Palframan joining over a thousand people at the Land Defence Alliance rally in Toronto on September 27, 2023.
