“Tsilhqot’in” means “blue water people”. On June 18, 2020, we were fortunate to get to hear from the stewards of the Chilco River, who caretake the strongest salmon run in the world.

We heard from Chiefs Jimmy Lulua and Chief Russ Myers Ross, whose long struggle to gain authority over their territory achieved the first recognition of Aboriginal Title in Canada. A group of 200 people on this webinar were led in an opening prayer by Peyal Laceese of Tl’esqox (Toosey). Laceese was the first Indigenous person to drum and sing on the floor of the House of Commons: another ‘first’ for a Nation who view their groundbreaking work as the assignment given to them by their grandparents’ generation.
