Watch Episode 2 of “Wellhead to Tidewater” with Kayah George

Kayah George of Tsleil-Waututh Nation and Tulalip Tribes spoke on what her communities have been organizing and the impacts of the super tankers on the Salish Sea, as well as on language and culture.

Kayah spoke with Sam Suarez, an organizer living in Oregon who has been travelling throughout the Pacific Northwest determined to stop Trans Mountain. Sam has organized a Talent against Trans Mountain event and has been a strong voice against the tankers and pipes moving through Vancouver and Washington waters.

Says Kayah,

“I am of the Tsleil-Waututh people. Our name, in our language, means “people of the inlet.” It’s difficult to imagine one of the most beautiful places on earth contaminated by oil … but this is a reality I have to think about every time I look out onto the waters of my Salish Sea. The inlet’s waters are our oldest grandmother, who has brought us all life. Now all of it is under threat. It’s why I will continue to stand up to pipeline companies, and now Canada’s federal government, every step of the way.”
