Last night, we joined Smogelgem (Warner Naziel), Dstahyl (Adam Gagnon), Hagwilow (Antoinette Austin), Kloumkhun (Alphonse Gagnon), and Tsebesa (Lillian Wilson) to hear about the Wet’suwet’en people’s struggle to uphold their laws and protect their yintah. It’s a 22,000 km2 area with wondrous ecological diversity — that sits at the epicentre of an industrial explosion of unprecedented proportions.

We heard about how a Wet’suwet’en prophecy, “if the glacier melts, the world will catch fire” is coming true in the real-time loss of snowpack and watershed vitality due to climate change. We heard about the awful impacts of unchecked industry, from the tragedy of salmon unable to return upstream to spawn due to too-hot waters, to the wedges that have been planted in small communities that are turning people against one another.
In these fraught times, we were invited, last night, to do the opposite. In passionate appeals, the Chiefs invited us to turn towards one another, and join forces to support the legal challenge that offers a way to hold Canada accountable to their climate commitments.
